Language is one of the most difficult cognitive capacities to master.
It is not surprising, therefore, that many developmental disorders
such as autism are marked by an accompanying deficit in language
skills. MEHRI research suggests that this deficit can be attributed
to a lack of functional emotional development. Non-human primate
research has uncovered surprising parallel facts: non-human primates
do not achieve human-like levels of language development, nor do
they achieve as advanced a level of functional-emotional development
as healthy humans. Studies of language development, therefore, provide
a convenient window for studying the convergence of the clinical
and non-human primate research lines.
