For Parents

There are many things parents of both developmentally delayed as well as normally developing children can do to aid and encourage their child’s emotional and cognitive development. We especially encourage all parents to use the Functional Emotional Growth Chart Parent Questionnaire with their child. This is a short and simple questionnaire parents can use to assess their child’s development beginning as early as the 0-6 month stage. We also suggest reading the Family First pamphlet which contains a number of simple activities that parents can engage in with their children to foster their functional emotional growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are parents the cause of autism?
A: NO! Children with autism have special needs. There are a number of excellent programs (such as DIR or the Hanen More than Words program to name only a couple) that teach parents how to recognize and meet such needs. In this sense, parents can play a critical role in helping thier child overcome the difficulties associated with autism.
